Iris is struggling to make life work, still adjusting to her divorce of a year while keeping more than busy with work, community involvements and raising her teen daughter. But this is life as she knows it. Sometimes small town living gives us a sense of keeping up with persona that once might not think about in a larger town. When Iris meets her new neighbour she seems to dislike him but I wonder if she is more concerned that he draws her attention and makes her think of things she is missing.
Carter is keeping himself busy flipping houses these days. Long gone are the days of law school and court rooms. But the dread of the loss of family and the knowledge that one day he will have to return to face the music and disappointment that he left behind. Oh, he misses his brother very much and wishes that his leaving didn't put a stress on that relationship as well. When he happens upon the beautiful neighbor when he pops over to borrow a hammer, he finds himself with a wonderful distraction. Something about Iris and her reactions to him, have him going back for more.
The last think Carter was looking for when he purchased the house in Spangler was "home". The longer he stays and the more people he meets, he finds himself thinking he could stay right where he is. Does it have anything to do with Iris? Will they both finally find a happiness they weren't sure they desereved?
Although I found the story to start off a little slow and it took a little bit for me to get really interested in the story and the characters it was a fun book to read. The banter between Iris and Carter kept a smile on my face while reading. This was my first Jo Richardson book and I will search out to see what else she has written.
